A bstract This paper describes a new type of apparatus capable of use for heating gases above the operating temperatures permissible in metallic heat interchangers. The principle involved consists of heating refractory pellets by means of high‐temperature gases and then passing a gas to be heated through a permeable bed of the heated pellets. Details of the refractory constructions are described and performance figures are given for some operating units. Some applications for the use of this pebble heater in the ceramic and metallurgical fields are also given
