A bstract An approximate mathematical method is worked out for determining the effect of steel supporting members underneath a glass tank on the heat loss from the glass tank and the surface temperature of the refractories. A series of charts has also been prepared for the rapid calculation of heat loss and surface temperature, if the thickness and thermal conductivity of the refractories and the details of the steelwork are known.
