A bstract Samples of Georgia kaolins were investigated by thermal analysis and by X‐ray and microscopic examinations. Soft kaolins were found to have a high percentage of crystalline kaolinite, whereas hard kaolins contained substantial amounts of less crystal lized material. Variations in the degree of crystallization, grain size, nature and amount of organic matter, and admixture of different minerals are given as reasons for the differences in the clays examined.
