A bstract A study was made of the influence of the iron‐oxide and alkali contents and absorptions of clay bodies on their ability to take a zinc‐green vapor glaze. Although greens may be obtained on bodies with a wide range of compositions and with absorptions up to 8.4% under exacting conditions, the range of bodies which take a green glaze under less favorable circumstances is comparatively small. The probability of obtaining good greens was greatest with those bodies whose absorptions were below 2% and which contained 8 to 18% iron oxide and more than 6% alkalis. Firing to higher temperature and cooling rapidly improved the tendency to produce greens. Desirable tans, browns, brick reds, and grays were obtained by firing to low temperatures and cooling slowly.
