A bstract The chemical durabilities of 25 glasses, with and without alumina, were determined by a powder method. From the data obtained a formula was derived for calculating the chemical durability of sand‐soda‐lime glasses containing alumina. The introduction of 1.5 to 2.5% alumina improves the chemical durability, the greatest benefit occurring when the alumina is one‐eighth the soda content.
