Until recently it had not been known that beta alumina could be converted directly to the alpha form without going through the molten state. This paper is the report on an investigation which shows that beta alumina changes rapidly to the alpha form at temperatures as low as 1300°C when heated in a vacuum. It was also found that the temperature at which rapid conversion starts rises successively in atmospheres of hydrogen, air, and argon. Petrographic identifications were checked by density determinations.
