A study was made of the petrographical and mineralogical characteristics of Illinois underclays, which were found to be mainly potash beidellite purified before deposition under the conditions of the Pennsylvanian period. Feldspars, muscovite, quartz, and other minerals were mixed with the clay minerals during deposition in water, but later the carbonates were removed. The weathering profiles developed on the underclays resemble the Wisconsin till.
