During cooling, compression tests were built up in the enamel coating while the iron itself was under tensile strain. The compression forces from the three sides met at right angles at the corners of the linings and caused chipping Mechanically reënforcing these corners helped little. By notching the flanges, welding in small fillet, and welding an angle strip underneath the flange at the corner, the forces at work were reduced enough to overcome the chipping.
