An X‐ray diffraction examination was made of high‐fired porcelain to determine if strains, differences in composition, or density of the crystalline phases could be detected. Both inherent and superimposed strains were studied. Although very small changes in the diffraction pattern of porcelain under superimposed strains have been recorded, not enough data have been obtained to state definitely whether inherent strains can be detected by this method. Details of X‐ray equipment and procedure are given.
