A brief review of the causes of scumming and glaze peeling is given. The usual use of barium carbonate for the prevention of these defects is also outlined. The reactivity test for barium carbonate and a suggested chemical analysis for soluble sulphates are described. Reactivity values of various barium carbonates are reported, followed by a discussion of the practical value of the reactivity test. A specification for barium carbonate is recommended.
