Accurate prediction of service value is a prerequisite to the devising of methods of control, development, and specification based on laboratory test data. The precision conditions which must be met before such prediction is possible are given in the paper and the difficulties usually encountered in trying to meet these conditions in ceramic work are shown by examples chosen from the field of refractories.
