The conditions in underground clay mining as noted during a survey of the heavy clay industries of Ohio are discussed. The need for greater study of the subject is stressed, especially the haulage, drainage, timbering, panel development, and pillar drawing phases. The solution suggested is a mine as carefully planned and operated as the manufacturing plant in order to increase the percentage of recovery and reduce the cost per ton.
