The value of the petrographic microscope to the glass technologist in identifying crystalline defects in glass and impurities in raw materials is pointed out. The behavior of light in passing through crystalline materials and methods of manipulation of the petrographic microscope in the identification of crystalline compounds in glass and glassmaking materials are described briefly.
