Two systems, the “advancing system” and “retreating system”, of operating the usual method of clay mining called “room and pillar work” are considered. The advantages and disadvantages of each system are presented. Details incident to mining, such as concentration of working area, frequent mapping of survey, haulage ways, room necks, pillars, and timbering are discussed.
