The explanation on the causes of the surface devitrification of glasses upon heating, as heretofore considered, is imperfect. The modes of surface devitrification are greatly influenced by the surface conditions of the glasses. The author gives an interpretation on the causes of this phenomenon of surface devitrification, i.e., the surface contraction which is caused by the surface tension at the glass surface acts most seriously toward the surface devitrification.
