The need for accurate control of an oil‐fired furnace operated at a temperature above the range of platinum thermocouples led to the development of a new type controller. Disadvantages of ordinary types of controllers are discussed. The mounting of the radiation pyrometer used is described. Full details of the construction and operating principles of the controller are given. Results obtained are far better than with most careful hand control.
