Spalls in spalled bricks are, under the conditions postulated by F. H. Norton, tensile, not shear fractures. The surface of separation bears no simple relation to the isothermal surfaces. In a “semi‐infinite” slab, the diffusivity has no influence on the tendency to spall, but does influence the location of the surface of parting.
