Selecting bands for round kilns is largely a rule of thumb matter, practice ranging from a few light bands to a jacket enclosing the entire kiln with openings for wickets and fire boxes. The purpose of this paper is to analyze stresses in and thrust caused by a round kiln crown and select bands to with stand these stresses.
