For the identification of stones in glass, it is not only necessary to observe the external form of the crystalline substances forming the stones, but also to determine their optical properties by means of the polarizing microscope. A brief description of the method of preparation of stones for microscopic examination is given. The principal optical properties and distinguishing characteristics of the crystalline substances occurring in stones in the soda‐lime glasses are noted.
