This paper examines US research on child welfare outcomes, focusing on family preservation, out‐of‐home care, and family reunification services. The review highlights the range of mixed findings in each of these areas, along with methodological issues and constraints. In light of the complexity of child welfare services, future outcome research should complement the rigorous use of quantitative methods with the careful application of qualitative methods.
