In this article the author describes the establishment of a series of initiatives to enable young people leaving care to express their views and to make some attempt to gain a hearing from those with power. The process was not without its pitfalls, but the paper demonstrates that voluntary organisations can show how the empowerment of young people can help them, even if their effectiveness in changing the ‘system’ is limited‐as indeed it is for most adults.
