SUMMARY. A startling increase in the number of severely handicapped babies surviving beyond their first few weeks is confirmed by an analysis of families applying to the Family Fund for help. Many more of these babies, too, require so much more care and attention than a normal tiny baby that they are now immediately accepted as eligible for Family Fund help. Though the Fund exists to meet the needs of these families, this article also considers the issues for the increasing number who are having their lives irrevocably altered by having to care for a very severely handicapped child
