S ummary Histological investigation of the buccal and pharyngeal mucous membranes of Triturus vulgaris, Salamandrina perspicillata, Aneides ferreus, Aneides flavipunctatus, Aneides lugubris, Desmognathus, fuscus, Eurycea bislineata and Hydromantes genei suggests that gular vibrations are not concerned with gas exchange but with the sense of smell. They should not be interpreted as respiratory.
