Summary.1 The early development of the fore‐limb and the origin of the brachial sac in Xanopuslaevis are described. 2 The brachial sac is shown to arise as a split in the limb rudiment, not in communication with either the opercular chamber or the exterior at the time of its formation. A derivation of the brachial sac in phylogeny is suggested. 3 The formation of the fore‐limb rudiment is shown to be unlike that known in any other tetrapod vertebrate.
