Summary.1 The early larvæ of the Common Frog, the Common Toad, and the Yellow‐bellied Toad, Bombina variegala variegata Linn., do not derive noticeable quantities of food matserial from their own egg‐envelopes. 2 The envelopes are the seat of more active bacterial growth than the open water of the ponds, and this probably accounts largely for their disappearance. 3 Frog and Toad‐tadpoles seem to develop faster when they are allowed to remain on the envelopes.
