The concept of implied alignments, as used in modern systematics literature, is discussed. Basic notions about how to generate implied alignments are given together with explicit examples. The objective of this article is to guide researchers on how to produce implied alignments for validating purposes in an efficient manner using POY. © The Willi Hennig Society 2005.
