Anti‐thyroxine (T 4 ) immunostaining in the endostyle and thyroid tissue during metamorphosis of sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus suggested that T 4 synthesis occurs on the luminal surface of the apical membrane of selected cells of the endostyle, and that a ‘classical’ endocrine thyroid function was only evident in post‐transformed animals.
