Ophidion saldanhai sp. nov. is characterized by the following combination of characters: four gill rakers on the lower limb of the first gill arch; 17 pectoral rays; rostral spine strong, triangular in section and with dorsal ridge; predorsal region naked; posterior part of the orobranchial chamber, gill arches and gill rakers blackish; foregut and stomach black, hindgut pale.
