Both 1 + and 2+ brown trout fed during the day and at night when held in hatchery tanks at low temperatures (2·7–3° C). Over 60% of the daily ration was consumed during daylight hours, but there were differences in feeding behaviour between fish of the two age groups: the 1 + trout had greater feeding activity at night than the 2+ fish.
