Red coloration and male parental behaviour in the threespine stickleback

In an anadromous population of the threespine stickleback, male red coloration was correlated with agonistic and egg care behaviour of parental males, but not with hatching success. When one male took over a neighbour's territory, the dominant male had more intense red coloration.
