The development and growth of Japanese anchovy larvae, Engraulis japonica , are described from laboratory‐reared specimens. Fertilized eggs were collected from cultured parental fish. Rotifers, Anemia and copepods were offered to larvae of different sizes. Fin ray formation was completed at 21 mm S.L. Pigmentation during development is described. Newly hatched larvae grew to 29·38 mm standard length in 62 days. The daily length increment averaged 0·43 mm.
