Total mortality and exploitation rates of Bagrus docmac, Tilapia nilotica and T. variabilis in the inner Kavirondo Gulf of Lake Victoria were estimated. Fishing mortality comprised the greatest portion of the total mortality. Catch per recruit for B. docmac and T. nilotica indicated the exploitation levels were almost three times those yielding maximal catches. There has been an apparent shift in gear from beach seines and hooks to mosquito nets and smaller mesh gill nets.
