During seven years of intensive fishing, the average individual size of pike caught declined progressively until the last year of the study. The size structure of the population markedly changed. Three phases could be identified. 1. a high proportion of large fish, 2. a high proportion of small fish, and 3. equal numbers of large and small fish. The growth of the different year classes in their first year of life showed an increase from 180 to 220 mm.
