The structure and histochemical characteristics of the epidermis of the char Salvelinus alpinus (L.) were studied at the light microscope level. Sialic acid‐containing glycoproteins appear to form the main components of the mucous or goblet cells. A single incidence of handling can significantly increase the concentration of superficial goblet cells in the epidermis. Repeated handling results in a maximal response after 1 week but this is reduced to control levels after 1 month. These results are interpreted in terms of the structure of the char epidermis.
