Identification of the juvenile mullet of the east coast of South Africa

Juvenile mullet are identified at the stage at which they first enter estuaries (10–50 mm in most species) through the use of dentition characteristics and lateral line scale counts. Techniques which simplify the determination of these features are described and a key to the 15 South African species is provided.
