The development of chromatophores and the formation of colour patterns in Tilapia mossambica are described. A number of colour patterns are associated with certain aspects of behaviour. Four different melanophore systems are involved in the colour pattern formation. There appear to be 14 patterns which, in various combinations, produce a series of colour patterns. Each of these may convey a different message to different species of Tilapia .
