Ectopic implantation of Xiphophorus causes the accelerated rejection of subsequent grafts of antigenically similar adult tissues; conversely, prior transplantation of adult tissues causes the accelerated rejection of subsequent grafts of related embryos. Xiphophorus embryos carry adult histocompatibility antigens before birth; the failure of the embryo to elicit a maternal immune response during gestation is not due to antigenic immaturity.
