“The New World honors him,“ states the verse on the stained glass panels that embellish the entrance archway at St. Margaret's Church in London. The brilliantly wrought window was given by an American, journalist George William Childs, then Editor‐in‐Chief of the Philadelphia Public Ledger , 1 commemorating the Englishman who had spoken out for liberty in his own country at the same time the American colonists were just beginning their long approach to the eventual Declaration. Herein lies not only our claim to kinship with Milton, but as well a pew reserved “in perpetuity” (p. 186) for Americans at St. Margaret's. At the ceremony for unveiling the gift, however, Matthew Arnold emphasized Milton's poetic excellence, not his libertarianism.
