In his entertainment A Mask Presented at Ludlow‐Castle, 1634 , Milton describes the followers of the “foul inchanter” Comus, son of Circe by Bacchus, as a “rout of Monsters” who have been transformed, by a metamorphosis of their heads, Into som brutish form of Woolf, or Bear, Or Ounce, or Tiger, Hog, or bearded Goat, All other parts remaining as they were.
