MEDICAL knowledge like other branches of learning has advanced from simple beginnings ; its development continues vigorously and the growth is still far from complete. It is difficult to form a picture of the state of medical knowledge when the science was in its infancy. One is often struck by the layman's ignorance of simple facts which to the trained practitioner are almost matters of common knowledge, yet the educated layman of to-day probably knows more about medicine than did the practitioner of 400 years ago. The growth of medicine must have taken place along similar lines
