Summary1 A simple method for quantifying ammonium excretion in soil microarthropods (Collembola and mites) is described. 2 Microarthropods were kept in closed vials on a pH‐buffered floor of moist quartz sand where excreted ammonium (NH 4 ‐N) was trapped. 3 Basic excretion rates in the range of 0·2–1·6 µg ‐N mg −1 dry weight/2 days were estimated for five species of Collembola and one mesostigmatid mite.
