Acanthocardamum is a monotypic genus in the Brassicaceae restricted to the alpine region of the Zagros mountains in Iran. Earlier authors have suggested the genus to be close to either Lepidium or Aethionema . To elucidate the systematic position of the genus, ITS sequence data of Acanthocardamum erinaceum were analyzed together with representatives of the tribes Aethionemeae and Lepidieae. Our molecular analysis clearly demonstrates that A. erinaceum is not close to Lepidium or to other representatives of tribe Lepidieae, but is instead nested within Aethionema. Based on these molecular results and a reevaluation of morphological data, we transfer Acanthocardamum erinaceum to Aethionema as A. erinaceum (Boiss.) Khosravi & Mummenhoff.
