The intention in the final article in this special thematic number is: 1) briefly to review the nature of current linguistic theorising in SLA; 2) to provide illustrative examples of the data for which SLA must account; 3) on the basis of these examples, to identify aspects of SLA which cannot readily be explained by ‘property theories’ but which receive an explanation within Jackendoff's theory of Representational Modularity (Jackendoff 1997, 2002); and, 4) to conclude with a brief examination of what each perspective seems to have to offer researchers in SLA.
