I shall be separating from Language Learning, at the end of 2005, after 27 years on my watch as the general editor and executive director of the journal. For close to 40 years I have been a participant‐observer of the ever‐changing landscape of applied linguistics, or the language sciences, as I prefer to call it. In 1978 I was invited, quite unexpectedly, by the Board of Directors to the helm of what was then called Language Learning—A Journal of Applied Linguistics . Its name now is, as you know, Language Learning—A Journal of Research in Language Studies , and this is not just a semantic change. At this juncture I would like to, with your indulgence, share with you some of my thoughts and reflections as they have crystallized over the years.
