The effects of nitrogen upon gamete production and upon the level of glutamine synthetase (GS) in dividing cells of Chlorococcum echinozygotum Starr have been studied. The level of GS in cells that are dividing is not negatively correlated to sexuality as proposed earlier. Instead, the level of GS in regenerating dividing cells appears closely related to the suitability of the nitrogen provided in the medium for general growth. The effects of metabolic inhibitors upon gamete production indicate that gamete differentiation involves transcription.
