Drawing on the overall theme of the Arusha conference – “Moving in the Spirit” – this article uses personal reflections on the event as a starting point for some observations about how mission is moving and about moving forward in mission. Given the strength of Christianity in Africa, we are likely to find that it will strongly influence the mission of the future, so particular attention is paid to the African resources presented at the conference and the heritage of the East African Revival. This contribution addresses five main themes: gender justice and peace; the place of mission in the World Council of Churches (WCC); resistance to racism and marginalization; the ecclesiological implications of globalization; and renewal movements. The article sees promise in the theme of “transforming discipleship” as it arises from the WCC statement on mission and evangelism: Together towards Life (2013).
