As a senior official of the TUC and then the G eneral S ecretary, the author worked with Bill M c C arthy from the late 1970s and was able to observe B ill's creativity and agility as a mediator in industrial disputes. In this appreciation, he tells some stories of B ill's career which evoke the memories of an era when industrial disputes were front page news and B ill was often asked to help resolve them.
