Summary A case of benign xanthomatous tumour of the lung presenting with haemoptysis in a woman aged 49 years is described. Histochemical studies were carried out to determine the nature of the lipids present within the tumour and these were found to be cholesterol and cholesterol esters. The xanthoma cells were considered to be the result of macrophage response to haemorrhage.
