Summary A 68‐year‐old man presented with the typical picture of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. The presence of fibrin degradation products in the patient's serum was demonstrated as the only abnormality of coagulation. The patient is unusual in that the evidence for the presence of a consumption coagulopathy rested upon the presence of fibrin degradation products and thrombocytopenia. He has recovered following heparin therapy, and is being maintained asymptomatically, despite evidence of continued disease activity, by use of warfarin sodium.
