Summary Controversy exists over the aetiology of primary lactase deficiency, which may be either a genetic defect or an adaptive phenomenon. The incidence of lactose intolerance in a group of Australian‐born Chinese was 56% compared to an incidence of 95–100% in Chinese resident in Australia and indigenous Chinese in Singapore. The lower incidence of intolerance in Australian‐born Chinese suggested that an environmental rather than a genetic factor was operative and this appeared to be a high intake of lactose in the tolerant subjects.
